Tragedy in Philippines
Typhoon Haiyan has destroyed millions of homes, and has ruined over 9.5 million lives. Many poeple were affected by this storm and are still searching for their loved ones. Based on satelites, the U.S. military's joint typhoon warning center estimated that the Haiyan's winds reached 195 MPH. Shortly before it made landfall, with gusts at about 235 MPH, but from the Philippines weather officials estimates were lower. They estimated that the storm packed sustained winds at 147 MPH and gusts at 170MPH when it hit land. If the higher estimates are correct, the warning the warning center says Haiyan's maximum stregnth would beat the previous record holder, hurricane Camile, which hit the northern Gulf Coast in 1969 with wind gusts reaching 190 MPH. If you want to make donations to theese devastated people, you can go to the American Red Cross. Anything will help.
The New Auditorium by Samantha G. & Abigail R.
We interviewed Dr. Crum and Mr. Gaten to find out about the new auditorium. The first question we asked was, "When is the new auditorium going to be ready?" They said, "It was supposed to be done on November 12, but there were some delays, so we're shooting for December 1st." The second question was, "How is it suppose to look?" They responded, "It's supposed to look state of the art, but we will lose some seats because they will be bigger. The third question was, "Why did you decided to make it better?" The response was that it was the division's decision. The fourth question was, "What do you think about upgrading it?" The response was they think it's a great idea. The last question was, "Will there be any delays?" The response was, "The lights were late, so that's what we know."
Things that Waste your Life by Taylor DeRossett
Smoking TV, and drugs all are opportunities to waste your life. They are all addicting and have the potential to make your life worse. Many teens think these factors are insignificant, but they have an impact on your future.
The only impact smoking has on a person's life is bad. There are no benefits of smoking even if someone has told you otherwise. It makes you hair, teeth, clothes , and breath sick, it makes a mess anywhere you choose to smoke, it's very costly, and can cause short and long-term health problems. Many people have argued that smoking makes you "cool," but if bad breath and yellow teeth are the result for being "cool," is it really worth it?
Tv, another prince factor that causes teens to waste their lives, is mindless and can lead teens to be unsuccessful. Another factor that supports the idea that most TV includes violence, negativity, and carelessness. Did you know that a typical child is exposed to 8,000 murders on television by the time they would finish elementary school. Television also makes you want things you would never want or need before, due to advertising.
Drugs, the third factor that leads to a wasted life is arguably the factor that has the most impact on limiting your potential for success. Teenagers across the county are lured into drugs for something called a "high." This is a highly pleasurable, short-term experience that leads teens to become addicted to all sorts of drugs. these drug "highs" always end , and when they do despair will start to seep in and poison their minds. Many ask if this is the consequence of drugs, then why do people start drugs in the first place? The answer is similar to why teens smoke. Teens want to be cool. They want to feel like they are a part of something even if its bad.
Well, listen up people! I've got something to say. Smoking and drugs DO NOT make you cool. If anything it makes you dumb. If you go down these paths, you might never come back. SO I tell you today, from the words of everyone who is smart, DON'T BE STUPID!

D.C. Field Trip by Claire N. & Rahwa Y.
On Friday, April 12, 2013 the middle school grades went on the annual field trip to Washington, D.C. Students enjoyed roughly three hours to explore the museums. Students went to the Museum of Natural History and the American History Museum in seventh grade, the National Archives and the National Air & Space Museum in eighth grade, and the American Indian Museum and the American History Museum in sixth grade. Afterward, everyone boarded the buses to go to Potomac Mills Mall for dinner. This was an extra-ordinary field trip where we visited some of the finest museums in our nation's capital. It was very education and we learned while we also had fun. This is a favorite trip among students, and once again everyone had a blast!

The History of Anime
By Niara Russell
Anime is based on Japanese comics also known as Manga. It is hugely popular almost everywhere and it interests me, too. It is one of my favorite things to draw. There are many anime cartoons. I don't really watch them, but I do like the art.
Osamu Tezuka is considered the father/god of manga, and the godfather of anime. He used to work at Toei, the first Japenese animation company that started in 1948. Later, he quit because his contract expired and created his own company in 1961 called Mushi Productions as a rival to Toei. In 1963, he created a successful T.V. series called Astro Boy, which he later made into a computer animated movie you can see today. Anime also was also influenced American films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Mr. Tezuka studied American film techniques and found a way to do animation cheaper.
Anime often exaggerates the character's emotions. Anime characters usually have big eyes, small noses, and brightly colored hair. Also, girls almost never wear pants, just skirts and dresses. Older villans will usually not be as pretty as the young ones. Some people don't consider anime art, but I do. The first anime I ever saw was Pokemon. I told my mom I liked the art and learned it was called "anime". I told one of my art teachers about it and she handed out booklets on how to draw it. I used that for my reference and got pretty good at it. Now, drawing anime is one of my passions.

2013 62nd Annual Tidewater
Science and Engineering Fair
by Rahwa Y. and Claire N.
On March 16, 2013, the annual TSEF was held at Old Dominion University. Several seventh and eighth grade Spratley Seahawks represented Spratley at the fair. It was a long day starting at 7AM and going til 4PM. The kids were the best of the best from the Tidewater region (even some from Richmond!) and there was some tough competition. Spratley came out with several winners! In the category of Physics and Astronomy, Ankush Hommerich-Dutt, an eighth grader, came in second place. In the category of Medicine and Health Sciences, the team of Claire Nelson and Rahwa Yehdego came in second place. In the category of Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering, Parker Bunting came in third place. Overall, it was a great day for our Spratley Seahawks to shine. Congratulations to all who participated. You presented SGC very well!
Behind the Scenes: Newspaper Club
By Wyatt J.
In room 237 every other Wednesday, we hold Newspaper Club where we make various articles and short stories.
The process of publishing isn't always easy, but it's always fun. First you write your article on a topic that you choose. When you are done, you then submit your article to the Editors that make your article "correct". This includes spelling grammar, and formatting. When the editors are done, they give it to the D.I.T.s. D.I.T stands for "Digital Input Technician". the D.I.T.s input the article into the SGC Newspaper Website
In the long run, most members think it is a blast. Dylan Dwyer says, "Yes, I enjoy being a D.I.T."
If you choose to join the Newspaper Club next year you are in for a great time.

Sorry, Star Wars fans! In case you haven't heard, Disney bought Star Wars for 4.05 billion dollars. They will be making an episode 7 in 2015. Walt Disney studios chairman, Alan Horn, will be the division president. George Lucas and Alan Horn have been close friends, though. As Lucas said, "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars onto a new generation of filmmakers."

Europa: Jupiter's Ice Covered Moon
By Hannah C.
Have you ever wondered what other life may be out there in our universe? Scientists look for planets or moons which are similar to Earth and may have the possibility of life. This article is about a moon of Jupiter which has approximately twice as much water than all of Earth's oceans combined. This moon is called Europa and it is about 670,000 km from Jupiter.
Europa was discovered by Galileo on January 8, 1610. Another astronomer, Simon Marius, claimed to have discovered Europa before Galileo, but that was never proven.
Here are some facts about Europa:
Do you think there is life on other planets? I do. Someday we may discover that life exists right here in our own solar system, and Europa is a good place to start looking.

Here are some facts about Europa:
- The surface of Europa is covered with ice and scientists believe salt water exists under all the ice (possibly supporting microbe life).
- Heat caused by Jupiter's gravity pulling on the moon may be enough to maintain the layer of liquid salt water under the surface.
- Europa gets as cold as -220˚C. Brrrr!
- Europa is slightly smaller than Earth's moon.
- Europa's ocean could be as deep as 60 miles (100km).
- Europa's atmosphere is made up almost entirely of oxygen.

2012-A Record Breaking Year
By Hannah C.
We broke a temperature record in 2012, but that's not a good thing. In 2012, the average temperature in the United States was higher than any year on record. Most states in the U.S. had record breaking high temperatures during 2012.
Greenhouse gasses cause the Earth's atmosphere to trap the sun's heat and bounce it back to Earth, not letting it to escape. Greenhouse gasses include carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane.
To understand this better, I interviewed Dr. Richard Ferare, a NASA scientist who studies the Earth's atmosphere.
Q: Do you think climate change is the cause of the high temperatures in 2012?
A: Yes, I do. Overall the climate seems to be getting warmer.
Q: Do you think 2013 will be ever hotter
A: It's hard to tell because even though the overall climate is warming up, from year to year there might be times when
it goes down. But long term the climate is getting warmer.
Q: Do you know how to lessen the amount of greenhouse gasses we relese into the air?
A: The greenhouse gasses are coming from burning fossil fuels. We use fossil fuels in our cars and when we burn coal. The way to lessen the amount of greenhouse gasses we release is to burn less fossil fuels, like riding a bike instead of driving.
Q: Do you know any way we can try to save polar bears?
A: The ice is melting due to climate change and the way to slow down climate change is to burn less fossil fuels.

Christmas Lights/Music! By Jeremy C
Every year John Storms puts together Christmas lights. This year he did the Number 1 viewed youtube video, "Gangnam Style." He does this with his computer and lots of other gadgets. The neighbors "don't get bothered by him doing all this." Some other neighbors said when he first moved to Texas the first thing he did was start on this Christmas lights. The Third Presidential Debate By Rahwa Y. & Claire N.
On the October 22, 2012, the third and last presidential debate was held. President Obama and Governor Romney got their last chance to show America who they are and how they would be a better president than their opponent. They were sitting down, which was a different layout than the last two debates. They focused on foreign policy and national security. Again, the president came out a little stronger than the Governor (according to most sources), although Fox News believed it was a tie between the president and the governor. The election is on November 6, 2012. It will definitely be a close race and the results will be exciting.

The Second Presidental Debate by Rahwa Y. & Claire N.
On October 16, 2012, the second of three presidential debates was held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. President Obama and Governor Romney went head-to-head again. The debate was held like a town hall meeting, which for those of you who don't know is when undecided voters ask the candiates questions. The questions varied from topic to topic like the attack in Libya, womens' rights and the auto bailout. Most sources agreed that the President came out on top. Some sources thought it was a tie, though. The next debate will be the last, on October 22, 2012.
Save the Pandas
By Haley C.
You know those big, cute, fluffy, black and white animals called Panda Bears? I bet you didn't know there are only about 1,600 more left in the world! That's right, there are only about 1,600 more panda bear's in the world and only about 300m are in captivity. These animals can't do anything to stop people from hurting them for their fur or whatever they want.

The First Presidential Debate
By Rahwa Yehdego and Claire Nelson
On October 4, 2012 we had our first presidential debate of the 2012 election in Denver. President Barock Obama and Mitt Romney went head-to-head in the first debate in a series of 3 debates. They covered a lot of issues in our economy and our health care. Overall, Romney was fairly aggressive and it just wasn't the presidents night. Although it was the president and the first lady's anniversary, it probably wasn't exactly where he would want to spend it that night. So the debate went to Romney even though recent polls showed that voters guessed that the president would win the debate. The next debate will be between vice president Biden and congressman Paul Ryan on October 11, 2012 .

Rubik's Cube
Taylor D.
When you think of the world's most popular game, what comes to mind? X-Box? Barbies? Tickle-Me-Elmo? Well, you'd be wrong. The world's most popular game is a Rubik's Cube.
It was first invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik. Erno said he enjoyed how the cube transformed as he turned one section to another. Soon others started to be drawn to the new and special toy.
Rubik partnered with a Hungarian toy manufacturer, and in 1977, the first Rubik's Cubes (Magic Cubes back then) appeared in toy stores. In 1975, they decided to rename the cube.
Not long after, the world was in a frenzy to get those small colorful puzzles. While appearing simple and uncomplicated on the outside, Rubik's Cubes were surprisingly tough to solve. There are more than 43 quintillion possible configurations for a Rubik's Cube, which conveniently stumped many people across the world. Nevertheless, the Rubik's Cube became increasingly more popular. At one point it even had it's own television show. Huge competitions are held all over the world to see who can solve the Rubik's Cube the fastest.
How fast do you think you can solve this international icon?

Uprising in Syria
By Xavier L.
On Oct. 9, Soviet-made cluster bombs were dropped on civilian occupied areas as Syrian forces have trouble at pushing back rebel territory. The cluster bombs were released from planes and helicopters, many landing on a highway dividing the town of Maarat al-Numan.
Cluster bombs are air-dropped or ground-launched explosives that release smaller bomblets, designed to kill enemy personal and destroy vehicles. Many other cluster munitions are used to destroy enemy operated areas, such as runways, disperse biological weapons, or scatter land mines. Civilians nearby cities of Taftanaz and Tamanea say helicopters dropped cluster bombs on and around their towns as well. Rebels had taken Maarat al-Numan, which makes a wide route from the capital Damascus to Syria's biggest city, Aleppo. Government has been fighting for control of the town since then
While all of this occurs, Turkey has recently banned Syrian aircraft, after Turkey intercepted a Syrian airliner with Russian made munitions for Syria. Syria has responded by banning Turkish airliners from passing over Europe.

On Oct. 9, Soviet-made cluster bombs were dropped on civilian occupied areas as Syrian forces have trouble at pushing back rebel territory. The cluster bombs were released from planes and helicopters, many landing on a highway dividing the town of Maarat al-Numan.

The Principal Advisory Board Meeting in the Cafeteria!
By Isaiah M. and Rahwa Y.
On November 2nd, 2011, some students and our principal, Dr. Crum, met up with our main Cafeteria Staff Manager, Mrs.Woodard. They talked about good foods we did like such as pizza, chicken patties, tacos, and others, and also the ones we didn't like too much like the red crab meat tacos and sweet potato fries and stuffed shells. We are also deciding to add a student planned menu. The Principal Advisory Board will acknowledge every month available to have a special lunch with any food we want! (Any food that's allowed at school, like cheeseburgers and tacos with sides of applesauce and green beans.)

The Battle of the Ironclads
By Dylan D.
One hundred fifty-two years ago, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. His election caused 11 states to secede (leave) the U.S. These actions started a civil war. Now that civil war is celebrating it's 150 anniversary, from 2011 (=1861) to 2015 (=1865). There were a lot of major battles throughout the war, but only one is important to Hampton Roads: The Battle of the Ironclads.
What are Ironclads? Well, an ironclad is a ship made of iron. It might have a wooden hull, so it can float.
In early 1862, the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.), the states that had seceded, raised up the sunken Union (U.S.A.) ship, the Merrimac. The C.S.A. then built a triangular shell (made of iron) over the Merrimac. They then renamed it the C.S.S. Virginia. The Virginia was sent to guard Hampton Roads from Union ships. The other ironclad was secretly built by the U.S. Navy. It was called the Monitor. On March 8th, the two ships met in the waters that would be home (present day) to the Monitor and Merrimac bridge-tunnel. The battle lasted for a couple of hours and finally ended in a draw.
The Monitor was sunk a year later off the coast of North Carolina in a storm. The Merrimac was sunk near the end of the war. As far as anyone knows, the two ships never fought a MAJOR battle against each other again.

Battle of the Books 2012
By Shane P.
What is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books, or B.O.B., is a program in which the student must read certain books and answer questions about them. There is a list of 15 books, and each student on the team should choose books that he/she likes or knows well to study especially hard and specialize in. In the competition, the questions will sound something like this: "In the book __________, what ___________________________________?" or "In the book ____________ how old is __________?" The first person to buzz in first gets the first try at answering the question. If they get it right, then yay, that team gets a point. If they get it wrong, then no one else from that team may buzz in. If the person buzzed in before the end of the question and no one else has buzzed in, the question will be repeated, this time to the end. If no one else buzzes in, remember: there are TWO teams left. This can be a HUGE advantage.
Whoever wins the city battle goes to regional playoffs, in which there are six teams. The three with the highest scores will move on to the finals. Whoever wins that, well, you can guess what happens. That team wins that year's Battle of the Books Tournament!!

Three New Elements On The Periodic Table
By Dylan D.
Have you heard of the Periodic Table of Elements? Well, it's a list of every known substance that makes up everything we use and know (it makes up matter). Three new elements were added last November in 2011. They are Copernicium (112), Livermorium (114), and Flerovium (116). I know what you're thinking: what happened to 113, 115, 117, and 118? They have been discovered but they're not properly named yet, so they aren't "true elements". Don't go looking for them in your backyard, because they're lab created. Neptunium (93), Plutonium (94), Americium (95), Curium (96), Berkelium (97), Californium (98), Einsteinium (99), Fermium (100), Mendelevium (101), Nobelium (102), Lawrencium (103), Rutherfordium (104), Dubnium (105), Seaborgium (106), Bohrium (107), Hassium (108), Meitnerium (109), Darmstadtium (110), and Roengenium (111) have also been lab created. Also, don't look for Polonium (84), Astatine (85), Radon (86), Francium (87), Radium (88), Actinium (89), Thorium (90), Protactinium (91), and Uranium (92); they're radioactive, meaning that they could explode. BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!

The School Dance
By Selena J.
The school dance was awesome. We had so much fun. We ate food, played around, danced, and listened to our favorite songs, like "Super Bass," by Nicki Minaj. There were some cool dancers showing off their fantastic moves. So next time there is a dance, will you be joining us?

Thanksgiving Lunch at the SGC
By Isaiah Morton
At our school, SGC, students and their parents participated in the Thanksgiving Lunch. Students talked with their best friends as the parents packed our cafeteria to the limits which made the occasion a total success. Most students laughed and played while parents compared the funny moments they'd had with their children. It was the most extraordinary celebration of the year at our school. The food and service were very great. The stuffing was stupendous and the turkey was terrific. The decorations were delightful and the best part was seeing your family laugh and talk about great things you have done in the past up to the present to each other's family. Students loved the special occasion of having a basic Thanksgiving at their own school with their family.

The red bird used to get a small power boost, but now it gets a little more. Just don't use this little wimps for bigger obstacles, like rock. Save that for his big brother.
