Chile Earthquake Wednesday April 1, 2014
By Zachary B.
An earthquake struck Chile at 8:46PM local time about 86km northwest of the mining area of Iquique (ee-KEE-kay). Large waves up to about 6ft. have hit some areas and there have been power outs, fires, and landslides. Dozens of aftershocks have been reported throughout the night, including a 6.2 tremor. At least six people have been known to be dead and tens of thousand of people have been evacuated. Officials said the dead included people who were crushed by collapsing walls or died of heart attacks. The interior minister also said that some 300 woman inmates had escaped from a prison in Iquique. Officials later said that 26 of them have been recaptured. Authorities say they have reestablished electricity supply in 50% of the affected areas. While the government said it had no reports of significant damage to coastal areas, a number of homes were reported destroyed by Arica. The quake shook buildings in Peru and in Bolivia’s high altitude capital of Iquique. Partial landslides have also taken place between the towns of Putre and General Lagos.

DeLorean Hovercraft
by Brezeil H.
The future is here! The DeLorean Hovercraft is a handmade vehicle that was made to reduce traffic and induce fun! It is a car that drives on land and also on water--well, not yet exactly. There is only a prototype, but everybody is hoping for the real version soon. The creators of this futuristic doohickey are Matt Riese and David DeLorean. They even have their own website about it called deloreanhovercraft.com. The hovercraft works by a fan in the front pushing air down and some of that air goes to a skirt, helping it move and float. What do you think? Are we moving too fast in technology?

Morse Code
by Zachary B.
If you ever drum your fingers and can't stop, I may have a solution. You can learn Morse Code! It may sound boring, but after you learn it, you can have conversations without others knowing what you are saying. Morse Code contains "dots" and "dashes". It was created by Samuel F., Joseph Henry, and Alfred Vail. It was made for ships to communicate with people on land. The term S.O.S looks like this ***---*** in Morse.

Skeleton Found on the Moon
by Brezeil H.
America's Apollo 11 lunar module photographed a human skeleton on the moon where it landed in 1969. I think it's fake because it looks like the skull is way too big, the legs are too small, and it would take longer than 50 years for the flesh to erode. Or maybe there were humans on the moon a long, long time ago and that one skeleton was visible from erosion. But I am leaning towards it just being another lame conspiracy. HOWEVER, there are over a 1000 pictures that show bare human footprints on the moon and they were hidden from the U.S.! I think, overall, it is just fake. What do you think?
NaNoWriMo
by Zachary B.
Hello, young reader. You may be wondering what NaNoWriMo is. Well, I'll answer that question easily. NaNoWriMo is the abbreviation for National Novel Writing Month. It is when you write a novel in 1 month. Normally, you would write 50,000 words for adults, but for children you write 5,000. It starts on November 1st and ends on the 30th. It may seem hard, but it is easy...after you get an idea rolling. There is a website you can go on: ywp.nanowrimo.org. First, you set up an account. Then you sign in to it. You can set a goal to how many words you want to write...as long as it is not ridiculous...and what genre it is and what the title your novel will be. Also, when you get to your goal, you get a password to go on a website and you get the satisfaction of writing a book and getting 5 FREE PRINTED COPIES OF YOUR BOOK! You can share it with your friends, family, and others. So sign up and start your novel before the end of November.

WWE Killdown
By Brezeil H.
This summer, 13 year old Armstrong Desvallons killed his 5 and a half year old sister, Viloude Louis, with WWE pro moves. The boy admitted he threw his body on Louis , elbowing her chest about 20 times over one month in the summer. Louis had broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a damaged liver. Some people think that Louis didn't die from a WWE wrestling move, but that he brutally beat her to death intentionally. At 13, knowing how large the wrestlers are, and maybe knowing that all of the fights are scripted, he probably should've known not to slam his body into a five year old's chest. Therefore, I think that the boy did all of those things intentionally to do major harm to her. What do you think?

Express With What You Wear
By Nara H.
Summer is over and fall is here. Which also means we are getting deeper and deeper into the school year. Girls, some not all, may think, "With this dress code we have at school, and now that summer's over and I can't wear my tank top and shorts, how will I stay in style?" Well, here are some tips for you.
1.JUST BE YOU! Don't worry about what other people think about your style. Your style is your style and no one can argue about that. Just do you! Who cares what you see Beyonce' or Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry wear on TV? Wear what YOU love!
2. WEATHER WHAT YOU WEAR. Your brown and black sandals may be fashionable, but it's cold outside. So maybe you need to think twice. There are many ways for you to be fashionable and comfortable at the same time. Wanna wear your sandals but it's freezing outside? Kick those sandals aside and put on some warm fuzzy boots.
3. HAVE FUN! The point is to have fun with what you wear, and just be yourself.
See? There are many ways to stay "in code" and in style at the same time.

Wazed Leaves

Do you like to do crafts? With Thanksgiving comming up this is a very simple craft. If you do this craft please have a adult with you because, there are a few dangerouse steps!
What You'll Need:
Paraffin wax paper (about 1/4 of a pound)
2 clean cans, one smaller than the other
Newspaper
Colorful leaves
Wax paper
Steps:
1. Place a sheet of paraffin wax paper in the smaller can, and place the smaller can in the larger can, add warm water to both cans, filling them to about half-an-inch below the rim of the small can. When melted, the wax will float to the top of the water.
2. Simmer the water over medium heat until the wax has melted (a parent's job). To avoid splatters, don't let the water and wax come to a full boil.
3. Use pot holders to remove the cans from the stove and put them in the newspaper. Hold a leaf by its stem and carefully dip the leaf in the wax. Then lay it on wax paper for the wax to harden.

Ben Carson: A True Hero
By Nara H.
Ben Carson was a true hero and he still is today. Ben Carson is a neurosurgeon. He is one of the world’s best doctors. Ben Carson’s story is very important because it encourages us to believe that we can do anything if we believe we can and work hard at it. When Ben was a little boy, he had two problems: (1) He wasn’t doing very well in school, and (2) he had a bad temper. But through those problems and other things in his life, his mom helped him and told him he might need to give up some things if he really wanted to do what he wanted to do. Kids teased Ben all the time, calling him the “classroom dummy” and just being mean. But today we call him the world’s best doctor, and that’s what he wanted to be.

Fall Outfits
By Cureha M.
Fall is here, you want to stay cozy and look good. Here are some outfits that are preatty nice.
-Clored Jeans: Wear brightly colored jeans. I prefer red, orange, blue, or green. This usually looks better with a white top and some flats. But you can top it off with a scarf
-Plaid Button Up: With a Plaid Button up, you could put a shirt under it or you could wear some black or blue jeans. You can choose between either flats or sneakers.
- Sweater: Pick a sweater of your choice and if you want to, make it a comfy day Khakis will be a good wear.
-Rolling Stones Tee: Fan or not, Rolling Stones t-shirts are pretty nice. Jeggings of black skinny jeans will work. But if it gets a little cold, try on a Aeropostale jacket.
Fall is a pretty nice season, not too hot and not too cold. But sometimes can get a little chilly. Besides that make sure you stay comfertable!

The new iWatch is a phone on your wrist. It plays apps and music. It is a small and powerful. This is Apple's version of a watch that is like a phone. Samsung made their own, but with their's you must buy the phone, too. Apple's iWatch is not supposed to be released until 2014. It also takes calls and can be used to text. If you get it, I hope you have fun with it.

Newport News Fall Festival
By Zachary B.
Last Saturday, I went to the Fall Festival at the Newport News Park. It had a lot of shows like a wood cutting show, an Indian tradition show that had Indian dances and songs, a few magic shows, and a few music shows. There were lots of stands to buy things like toys, games, pottery, and blacksmith items. The food they had included funnel cakes and deep fried candies that most people like, such as Oreos, Snickers, Reeses, and KitKats.

Mythology By Brezeil H.
Mythology is a series of tales that were told years and years ago. They also have been told all around the world. Have you ever heard of sirens, minotaurs, or even Cyclopes, well those are all mythological cretures. Mythological creatures are usually monsters that may or may not have been "slayed" by the hero or savior. But have you ever heard of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, or even Athena? Well, those are mythological people but specifically mythological Greek gods who all have special powers or at the end of the day, they become heros.

Battle of Gettysburg by Dylan D.
July 1-3 were sad days. On these days, 150 years ago, the Battle of Gettysburg happened. This was during the American Civil War. It all started when Confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to invade the north. The Union general Meade was sent to stop this. They met at the smell Pennyslvania town of Gettysburg. AFter three bloody days of battle more than 50,000 American men lay dead, wounded, or missing. In spite of this, Meade had successfully repled Lee's invasion. This was known as the turning point of the war. It wold take two more bloody years for the war to end though.

The Amazing Platypus by Wyatt J.
You may know them as a blue, secret agent, from Phineas and Ferb but the platypus is a real animal.
Platipuses are small brown, furry, and altogether fast moving, semi-aquatic animal. The platypus is a cross between a duck and beaver with its large bill from the duck andi ts flat tail from the beaver. It is a miracle that it's still alive. The platypus is a native to eastern Austrailia including the Tasmania. They are mainly nocturnal and they spend most of the time, they are awake under water foreiging for food coming ip for air every minute. One of the most unusual features about the platypus is the platypus has the ability to lay eggs even though they are mammals.
We can only wonder how the platyipus come to be and survived through the years.

Birds
By Hannah C.
You're jealous of birds, just admit it. They can fly everywhere, and you can't! One type of bird can even fly backwards! Hummingbirds are the only birds known to fly backwards. But there are some drawbacks to being a bird - if you were a flamingo, you could only eat with your head upside down. If you were a chicken, the longest you could ever fly would be 13 seconds. But if you were a spine tailed swift, you could fly 220 miles an hour! Here are some cool facts about birds.
-A house wren can eat 500 spiders and caterpillars in a single summer afternoon.
-Birds have hollow bones to help them fly.
-The chicken is the closest living relative to the T. Rex.
-The strike of the eagle talon is tow times as powerful as the force of a rifle bullet.
-The barn owl can swallow a large rat, whole.
-Mockingbirds can imitate many sounds, from a squeaking door to a cat meowing.
-A woodpecker can peck 20 times per second.
-Penguins can jump as high as six feet.
-Birds don't sweat.
-Ostrich's eyes are larger than their brains.
-The bones of a pigeon weighs less than its feathers.
-A Baltimore Oriole can eat as many as seventeen caterpillars per minute.
-There are around 10,000 species of birds worldwide.
-An albatross can sleep while flying.
I got my facts from these great websites: MSPAC-Angell, The Avian Web, Birdwatchersdigest, Goddidcreations, Sciencekids

Some of the groups are the: albatrosses, fulmars, prions, shearwaters, storm-petrels, diving petrels, and tubenoses. They are 1-7 specifes of birds. They are 15 specifes of Buttonquails. The distribution is Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Moracco, Algeria, Spain, Portgual, Australia, the Philippines, and PaPuo New Guinea. Morkie by Austin B.
Who's a small little puppy? The Morkie is. This little puppy is a dogbreed between Malteise and a Yorkie. They only grow up to about 4-15 pounds. These days are quick learners, smart and just a little stubborn. They can be bery exitable. IN fact, my morkie just runs around in circles just to burn off steam. The Morkie is very social but I wouldn't went to be taking in one for a few months, they get very attached to their owners. They're a great friend beacause of that and they're awfully cute.

Mongooses
Austin B.
There are many endangered animal species, but my favorite is the mongoose. Mongooses are mostly found in Africa some are in South Asia. They eat small animals like rodents, birds, reptiles, frogs, insects, and worms. They are 7 in-25 in. Normally, they have grey and brown fur. Their tails are almost as big as them: 6 in.-21 in.! They are endangered because of habitat loss. Some actually attack venomous snakes! I would like to have a house-mongoose for a house guard!

Jellyfish!
www.okeanosgroup.com
by Hannah C.
If you have ever been to the beach in summertime, you've probably seen (and maybe even been stung by) a jellyfish. You might know what a jellyfish is, but did you know that jellyfish predate dinosaurs and sharks? They've been around 650 million years! Also, they don't even have blood, bones, brains, or hearts (though some have eyes) and they consist of ninety-five percent water.
Jellyfish eat plankton and sometimes other jellyfish. Jellyfish take food in from a mouth on the underside of their bells. (The top of the jellyfish is called a bell.) Jellyfish's predators are sea turtles, sharks, and sometimes humans.
Some jellyfish are actually poisonous to humans. The man-of-war and box jellyfish are very poisonous, but they don't live around here. Jellyfish can even sting after they are dead. A group of jellyfish is called a smak, and smaks of jellyfish are a common sight at Buckroe Beach in the summer.
Jellyfish never stop growing. Ever. The biggest jellyfish on record had a diameter of eight feet, and the tentacles were as long as 1/2 the length of a football field.

Cheetahs
By Blake R.
Cheetahs are an endangered species of animals with only 10,000 left in the world. Cheetahs can run up to 75 mph. If you ever see a cheetah, look at his eyes. You will see tear marks, a black line that starts at the eyes and run down the face and stops at the mouth. Since Cheetahs are endangered, an amusement park called Busch Gardens ( Tampa Bay, Florida) has created a magnetic roller coaster called "Cheetah Hunt". They are saving the cheetahs and people have fun on this ride also! I love donating money to save cheetahs. The money you spen to buy tickets goes to save cheetahs. Cheetahs are amazing animals. You should see them at your local zoo!

The Liger: Nature’s Abomination
by Jhaiana T.
Lochness, Bigfoot, and the Abominal Snowman are mythical creatures that give humans the chills. Whether these monsters exist or not is unknown. However, on Earth, there is a real life monster. It’s called the Liger.
The Liger is a mixture between a Lion (male) and a Tigress (female Tiger). At first, the thought of a male Lion and a female Tiger mating seemed impossible. Then, in 1799, the very first Liger was born in India. Male Ligers cannot reproduce. They are not alone though. Mules are the same exact way.
The staggering minimum weight and length of the Liger is 900 to 1500 pounds and 12 feet. They eat about 25 pounds of food a day. At the age of around 3 and 4, they are about half of a normal tiger or lion.
Since the Liger is such a huge animal, it is considered dangerous. All Ligers are kept in a secure zoo because if it was in the wild it would wreak havoc in the ecosystem.

Legos
By Vaughn D.
Lego is a building activity for ages 4-16. In 1949 Lego was officially a business. The creator of Legos is named Ole Kirk Christiansen. The business was officially established in Billund, Denmark, which is in Europe.
Ole Kirk Christiansen was born April 7, 1891, and died on March 11, 1958. In those years of his life, he had a son named Godfred Kirk Christiansen and a grandson named Kjeld Krik Christiansen.
Ole Kirk Christiansen was born in Filskov, Denmark. Ole's nationality was Danish. Lego pieces were originally made of wood because Ole was a carpenter. One day the Lego factory burned downand when it was rebuilt, Ole decided Legos would be made out of plastic.
Legos are very fun to build because after you finish building your Lego set there are many fun activities to do.However, you will have to use your imagination.
The largest Lego set has about 4242 pieces and the smallest Lego set has about 30 pieces.
There are different types of themes for Legos, like Monster Fighters, City, Harry Potter, Duplo, Friends, and many more.

The butterfly projects are for the butterflies that came back from migration. They have come back to live in the garden across from Mrs. Sexton's classroom. Third graders colored butterfly pictures and wrote poems with facts. Just look outside and watch the caterpillars turn into butterflies, and soon we'll see them fly away.

Shells!
by: Kaya L., Ashley B., and Khela B.
In science, 3rd graders are learning about shells and different shell animals, such as the Chambered Nautilus and the conch shell. Animals like the Nautilus are endangered for their shell because of the shiny inside and pretty decorations on the front. They look very pretty, but were not made to die. Other animals like the conch shell are very beautiful. When the top gets bigger and bigger it forms a shell and it looks very pretty! All the shells deserve to live and are all pretty.

This year I went to Polar Plunge with my family. Polar Plunge benefits Special Olympics in Virginia. Several of my family members, including my dad, brother, aunt, and uncle, all braved the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This year over 1 million dollars was raised. There were fun filled events, such as a party in the tent, a costume contest, and a peewee plunge for any child under the age of ten. This was the twentieth anniversary of the Polar Plunge. Next year, will I see you there?

This is our Butterfly Garden. It was built in 2011. The butterflies come to rest when it is time to migrate. Lots of caterpillars are there in the spring on the flowers. It took lots of time to build. Monarchs are taking flight. All the plants are so beautiful and colorful. Some kids are allowed to read out in the Butterfly Garden. They put some good work and effort into the garden. That's our Butterfly Garden!

4th Grade Field trip

Two years, on Nov. 30, 4th grade visited the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum which honors Virginia's basketball, baseball, football, and soccer stars. It has a sports gallery where you can see stars of all sports as well as the horse Secretariat. There was a games-and-activities area where we got to play basketball, baseball, and football. It has a 125 seat theater which shows a movie about the History of Virginia Sports. We also saw the Paul Saywer auto racing exibit showing the real Tide race car and their sponsor, Tide. Now you know what the Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Portsmouth is all about: sports! Plus, it's a great place to take your family!

Halloween Costumes
By Selena J
Halloween outfits this year were awsome. A cute outfit was a little boy dressed up as Elmo and little girl dressed as the little mermaid. Another awsome costume was a boy who had an Angry Bird costume and a girl dressed up as a hip hop princess. A weird costume was a guy who was dressed as a guy out of jail and a weird lady had a spider hat and weird clothes. A scary outfit was a lady who had no eyes and a bloody face and a guy had no legs and arms and had crazy hair with a arrow through his head.

Humorous Fundraiser At Spratley
By Haley W.
Spratley Gifted Center is having a fundraiser. I hope parents and friends are able to help. Reach into your pocket or purse, open your wallet, close your eyes, and hope you pick out a fifty. Your son or daughter wants to have the time of their life packed into one amazing day by getting out of school. Every child dreams of riding in a limo and looking like a movie star! Buy a few items and send some to your friends and family. Students also have the chance to show how many items they have sold by getting one frog for every item. So please, please help out your child by selling some items!

Locker Room Makeovers: A Much Needed Remodel
by Ben A.
The locker rooms have been completely redone, equipped with new lockers, new benches, and new bathroom stalls as well as new light fixtures. To go along with the spacious new lockers, there is new flooring, new doors, and new non-graffiti-splattered benches. We can all agree that even though the new showers are still in the installation process, the locker rooms are in much better condition than last year, so don't forget to check out our new locker rooms!

Sibling Rivalry
by Claire N.
Have you ever had to share a school with a sibling? It can be a lot of fun or really annoying. Sometimes it's nice to have a brother or sister going to the same school as you, but a lot of it depends on wether they're older or younger than you. If they are older than you, sometimes the older kids know who you are and single you out. They might only know you as "John's sister/ brother". If your sibling is younger than you, their friends might pester you when they see you. Also, if your teachers had your sibling at one point, they think of you as your brother/sister and expect you to be just like them. However, sometimes having a sibling at school can give you a "safe" feeling. All in all it can be awesome or annoying to have a sibling attend the same school as you.

Spratley Fashion Do's and Don'ts
by Taylor D.
At Spratley Gifted Center, many students break the school dress code every day. Mr. Gaten and Dr. Crum both have made it clear that these discrepancies will be stopped. For example, some girls wear tank tops to school and those are most definitely not allowed. All shirts worn must have a sleeve. Mr. Gaten says that in previous years they had a 3 finger rule for the sleeve, but that does not apply now. Also, some girls are wearing skirts and shorts that are too short. According to the Hampton City Schools Dress Code, all bottoms must be fingertip length.
It is not just girls breaking the dress code. Boys are not allowed to "sag" under any circumstances. Mr. Gaten says that if anyone disobeys the dress code, they will be taken to the office so that they can call their parents and get a change of clothes.

Game Night
by Cureha M.
Spratley Gifted Center's first game night was a night of play. It featured games such as Guess Who, Connect Four, and much more. There were snacks and pizza and they ran out incredibly fast! Bingo was the most popular game. LOTS of people played it. There were tons of prizes, loads of laughter, and most importantly, FUN! I hope you can come to the next Spratley Gifted Center game night!

Limo to Lunch
by Ciara J.
The limo lunch was great! Everyone had a blast! We sang all of the songs on the radio. There were even two TVs. At CiCi's pizza, it was the best! We ate lots of pizza and of course, sweets! We played at the arcade and won stuff. That was the limo to lunch.
