Baseball Update

With the last year reighing champs the San Francisco Giants, (who did poorly this year.) were not in it. On the other hand, their arch rivils the L.A Doigers, faced the St. Louis Cardninals (who have been to the division series the past 2 years). They lost to the Doigers in 2009 , but they turned it around in 2013. They won to the Doigers 4-2 in the series. On to the A.L.D.S. the Yankees who were in it in 2012, their archrivils the Red Sox were in it. Then they knocked out the Tigers in 6 games. So the first world series game is the Cards ace. "Adam Wainwright" the Red Sox Starter is ,more than ready", John Lester said. Everyone thinks he is. "Birds vs. Beards.

MLB Trades
by Zachary B.
MLB trades have been happening a lot lately in the off season. One of the big teams has been the Yankees, who have picked up a few players and given some away. Their second basemen, Robinson Cano, has signed a 10 year deal with the Seattle Mariners and center fielder Curtis Granderson has signed to the Mets for four years. They have picked up Carlos Beltran for three years, Jacoby Ellsbury for 7, Brian McCan for 5, and resigned Kiroki Kuroda in a 1 year deal. Johnny Peralta is going to the Cardinals for four years. Mike Napoli signed a two year deal with the Red-Sox. Mark Trumbo went to the Diamond backs. The Padres signed Tigers closer, Toaquin Benoit. The Tigers and the Randers made a BIG trade: 1st baseman, Prince Fielder, and 2nd baseman, Ian Kinester. Later, the Tigers signed closer, Joe Nathen. The Kansas City Royals signed Omar Infante. The O's acquired Grant Balfour, closer from the Oakland A's. The Oakland A's took Baltimore's closer, Jim Johnson.

Phoebus Great Big Wins
By LeeAnn B.
Phoebus' softball team has been undefeated since the beginning of the softball season. This is because of our good pitchers and catchers. They also have very good infielders, outfielders, and coaches. They also have some very good batters. The scores have been 20 to 8. They have improved a lot. They are also very competitive, but they still play for fun even though they like to win.
They play all over the place like Phoebus, York County, Deer Park, and Warwick. GO, PHOEBUS!

NBA Playoffs
By EJ M.
The NBA's regular season has just ended and now it's off to the playoffs.
In the NBA playoffs there are seven games. One team plays another team until one team wins four games. When the one team wins four games they move to the next round, there are four rounds. If you lose you are out of the playoffs. If your team wins the final round they win the championship.
The Miami Heat won the last championship. Their team consists of Chris Bosh, Dwyne Wade, ans LeBron James. So far the teams moving oon to the second round are the Miami Heat and The San Antonio Spurs. The Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angelous Lakers are out the playoffs and the race for the championship . Who will win?

Soccer
by Nyah S.
Did you know there are 2 types of football? Well, if you didn't know before, you will now. Outside of America, people call soccer football. Soccer is very popular around the world. It is not clear who invented soccer, but Charles Goodyear invented the first soccer ball in 1855. It was made out of rubber, but was later improved in 1872. It is a favorite past time of many people, both in the U.S. and in other countries.
A Sport Called Volleyball
http://www.hawkeyetap.net.htm
by Nyah S.
Have you ever played a sport or had a favorite sport? Well, I enjoy playing a popular sport called volleyball. Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1865, at the Holyoke, Massachusetts, YMCA. When Morgan invented the game, his goal was to create a game for all ages and at the same time try not to make it too hard. At first, Morgan tried using a basketball, but later realized it was too heavy for the sport. Later, Morgan created the first ever "volleyball". It was made out of calf skin, or baby cow skin.
A volleyball court is a rectangle. It is 18 meters by 9 meters. The net divides the rectangle into two equal squares. The net is nine and a half meters long. The mesh in the net has squares that are ten centimeters wide. A volleyball is sixty-seven centimeters in circumference. A volleyball weighs two-hundred sixty grams. A volleyball can be only one color and it can't have any laces like a football. The uniforms for volleyball have kneepads, leather shoes without heels, shorts, and a vest.
A game starts when a player serves the ball. A person serves the ball by bumping it into play across the net with their fist. The other team then tries to save the ball from hitting the ground. The ball cannot ever be held or lifted. The game goes on until one team lets the volleyball touch the ground on its side of the court. A point is scored if the opposite team mishandles the ball. The first team to get fifteen points wins the game. It the other team has thirteen or more points, the game will continue.
Volleyball is a lot of fun to me. The only time I get to play it is in the summer. That is when there are lots of sports camps that focus on many sports, but mainly volleyball.

Basketball by Nyah S.
One of America's favorite sports is basketball. Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. Basketball is a sport that is divided into two teams. Each team consists of five players. The objective of the game is to score as many points as possible by shooting the ball into the basket. If a team puts the basketball into play from behind the mid-court line, they get 10 seconds to get it over the line. The way the players get the ball to one another is by dribbling or passing. If a team scores a basket, they get two points for their team. After that, the ball has to go to the other team. If someone makes a basket outside the three-point arc, that basket gets three points. If someone makes a free throw, it is awarded one point. at the end of the fourth quarter of the game, the team with the most points wins the game.
Superbowl XLVII By EJ M.
On February 3rd, 2013, the Baltimore Ravens and the San Franciso 49ers faced off in a football championship called the Superbowl. The Superbowl has always been a big accomplishment for anyone who made it. In Superbowl XLVII, the Ravens and the 49ers had to go head-to-head in a big battle. The winner who came out on top was the Ravens. The score was 34-31. It was the longest Superbowl in Superbowl history.
During the Superbowl, there was a lot of controversy. However, it was a very exciting game and in the end, the Ravens took home the trophy.

Stan Musial is the only Cardinal who hit over 400 hundred home-runs. He died at the age of 92 on January 19, 2013. He has been in the all-star game 24 times in Baseball. He got to throw the first pitch at the new Busch Stadium in 2005 and got to throw the first pitch at the all-star game at Busch stadium in 2008. He made it in the hall of fame in baseball. He is a legend in St. Louis cardinal history. In honor of him there is a big life size statue of him when you walk in Busch stadium.
Infield fly or Outfield Fly By Jeremy C.
On Friday, October 5, 2012, for the first time ever, it's the Wild Card play off game. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Atlanta Braves hit a two run homer, but in the top of the 4th inning the St. Louis cardinals got three runs. Then at the bottom of the 8th inning, the Atlanta Braves were hitting one out people on 1st and 2nd. The batter hit the ball 75 feet into the out field. Pete Kozmo went out to get the ball, but Matt Holiday said, "I've got it." So Pete Kozmo backed off and it hit the ground. The umpire called the batter out because of the infield fly rule. If two or more runners are on base in no distinct area and if an infielder could get the ball, it's an out two minutes later. People started throwing empty beer bottles, hot dog wrappers, cups, soda and even liquids. The left field umpire called it an out 5 seconds before it landed. Some people called it the worst call ever. Some people said it was an outfield fly, not an infield and the really upset people said, "That's the reason the Braves lost!"

Do you like football? If you do, this is the article for you!!! This article is about Old Dominion University (O.D.U.), a local college.
Here are some interesting facts about O.D.U:
*The mascot is a lion.
*The lion stands for THE KING!!!!
*Their team name is the MONARCHS.
O.D.U. has just finished its 3rd season of football and it has been a very good one. Their overall record for 2012 is 10 wins and only 1 loss. They had the bestt record in the Colonial Athletic Association conference.
ODU has a great team, but the star is their quarterback, Taylor Heinicke. He got a Division 1 record this year throwing the football 730 yards in one game. He is just a sophomore, which means he has two more years left to play.

Open Gym Tryouts and Making the Team
By Janiyah S.
It's basketball time here at Spratley Gifted Center. Both boys and girls in grades 6-8 have been working hard in open gym and tryouts. Many people have tried out, some having athletic abilities while some just beginning. All (4) coaches (Coach Sline , Coach Jones, Coach Taylor, and Coach Thomas) have done a lot to help the players and it is well appreciated. It will be a hard decision for them, but we all know not everyone can make the team. Keep checking the site and listen to the announcements and see who made the team!

High School Football:
KHS vs GHS
By Cureha M.
Where do the cheerleaders cheer and the bands play? Yup, you guessed it--another football game at Darling Stadium! On Saturday, October 1st, 2011, Kecoughtan and Gloucester High School went face to face for a football match. At half-time, the score was 20-0. Gloucester started the kick and #10 for Kecoughtan caught the ball, going 34 yards. However, they stayed in the place for 2 downs. Finally, #5 got the ball and ran to the 16 yard line, which made it 1 yard to go. Surprisingly, KHS didn't have a touch down. On GHS's ball, they spent 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down staying in the same place. Kecoughtan on offense got nowhere and with 42 seconds on the clock, KHS's #1 ran a long way to touchdown! Then we were counting on #4 for the kick off. He kicks, he scores! Then the score was 27-0. Gloucester needed to catch up quick. GHS was on offense, but still had nowhere to go. KHS really pushed hard on them!

Saturday, October 1, the North Hampton Bruins cheerleaders were loud and proud. The Phoebus Steelers had no cheerleaders that Saturday. The halftime show was not as great as it could have been; the ground was wet so they couldn't go into their stunts. They kept the Bruins going. In the end, they won.

A Fox Hill Redskin Football Player:
By Yuta S
I interviewed Davaughn D. He goes to Langley Elementry School and he is in 5th grade I interviewed him about his team, which is the Fox Hill Redskins. I interviewed him because he is my closest neighbor who is in the Fox Hill Redskins.
I asked him what his goal was in football. He told me that he wanted to score a goal more than his teammates. He wanted to play football because he likes how he tackles and scores a goal. It interested him because the Cowboys scored a lot of goals from 2007 to 2008. Davaughn's position is running back.
I asked him, ''Who is your coach?''
He said excitingly, ''My dad!''
Davaughn is a very important player in football. I think his dad is very proud of him.
